The University of Basel is required to abide by the Archival Act (Archivgesetz) of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, which is why all of the university’s organizational units must retain their documents until they are no longer needed for current activities.
The University Archives have been located at the premises of the State Archives (Staatsarchiv) of the Canton of Basel-Stadt since 1904. The University of Basel’s archivist makes arrangements (temporary archival) between the various units of the University of Basel that deliver various documents and the State Archives of Basel-Stadt.
The organizational units of the university are required to retain their documents until they are no longer needed for current activities. They are then delivered to the State Archives for assessment and, depending on the outcome, are either passed on to the University Archives or destroyed.
- The university archivist is the contact person for all pending deliveries of documents to the State Archives of Basel-Stadt.
- She advises and assists the various university units in matters pertaining to record keeping and business administration.
Please do not hesitate to contact her if you are planning to move, if you are running out of space in your archival spaces, if a regular delivery to the State Archives is pending or if you need to prepare an archival schedule or reorganize your archival procedures.
The regulations that govern document archival at the University of Basel went into effect in 2008. Please also refer to the information provided by the State Archives of Basel-Stadt concerning file deliveries and record keeping.
