International Cooperation
The University of Basel is locally anchored and connected through its research and teaching to cross-border and international networks. What these activities look like and how you can join is listed in the following.
Joint Supervision of Thesis
PhD candidates wishing to engage in a co-supervised thesis (Cotutelle de Thèse) find a great overview at GRACE, the Graduate Center of the University of Basel. Funding is restricted to students who are matriculated at a Swiss University for at least one study year. Funding requests are handed independently of the student's nationality.
EUCOR - European Campus
Students and faculty staff wishing to engage cross-border with the Universities of Freiburg i.Br. and Karlsruhe KIT (both Germany) as well as with Mulhouse UHA and Strasbourg Unistra (both France) find support at the EUCOR - European Campus Office of the University. Travel costs for attending seminars or lectures at these partner universities qualify for reimbursement. With your EUCOR student card you have access to libraries and cafeterias under the same conditions as in Basel. For getting your academic work as a student acknowledged it is imperative to consult with your professor and/ or tutor prior to engaging in an EUCOR course. Your stay abroad at an Upper Rhine university might help you setting the skills for organizing a long-distance study destination.
INTERREG - NRP funding
Early career scientists as well as established researchers are invited to submit project proposals together with French and German peers within the larger Upper Rhine area. Funding comes from both the EU and Switzerland and the entire program's name is INTERREG - New Regional Policy (NRP). One funding period runs over a total of seven years.
The INTERREG VA - program (2014 - 2020) has been supporting more than 40 projects out of a 100 million EUR total budget. For the current phase 2021 - 2027 researchers are invited to consult the website of Regio Basiliensis who is the coordinating body on the Swiss side for all five Northwestern cantons. For looking at projects selected for this phase please consult the INTERREG project database that holds information available in German and French. You will find projects with University of Basel researchers participating under the names of UPQUANTVAL, AUTOMETA, ALBUCOL, or ZUNAMI. For a general program overview in English, the Regio Basiliensis program site will help you further. During 2027, Regio Basiliensis will be staging information events with a look to the upcoming 2028 - 34 funding period. Bilateral Agreements for setting up academic partnerships
Research and Teaching Faculty at the University of Basel interested in setting up partnership agreements in Europe or Overseas are invited to contact the Student Exchange Office for Erasmus-SEMP agreements or to have a look at the agreement template for overseas partnerships.
