Globale Politik wird heute zunehmend von Fragen des Zugangs zu knappen Ressourcen geprägt, was sowohl Friedenssicherung als auch die Transformation hin zu nachhaltigen Wirtschaftsweisen vor neue Herausforderungen stellt. Die Studierendenkonferenz beleuchtet, welche Ressourcen künftig entscheidend sein werden und wie deren gerechte und friedliche Verteilung in einer regelbasierten globalen Ordnung gelingen kann.

Zweite Runde! Wir spielen mit euch jeden Monat ein Pub Quiz. Jedes Mal mit einem anderen Überthema, aber immer mit kuratierten, nicht Chat-GPT generierten Fragen, Filmclips, Songs und vielem mehr.

Gespielt werden vier Runden in Teams bis zu sechs Personen. Dazu erstellen wir ein Scoreboard mit den besten Teams unserer Uni. Ihr könnt also bei jedem Quiz etwas gewinnen. Mit jeder Teilnahme steigert eure Punkteanzahl, um am Semesterende den Semestersieg zu holen.

Startup Weekend Basel is a high-energy 54-hour event where participants from diverse backgrounds collaborate to turn ideas into real startup projects. Whether you come with an idea or join a team, you’ll experience the full entrepreneurial journey – from problem discovery and idea validation to business model development and a final pitch in front of a jury of experts.

During the weekend, mentors from the local startup ecosystem guide teams through key topics such as customer validation, prototyping, business planning and pitching, helping participants sharpen their entrepreneurial skills in a supportive and hands-on environment.

An der Woche des Gehirns 2026 in Basel stehen aktuelle Themen der Hirnforschung im Mittelpunkt: Wie steuern wir unsere Bewegungen? Wie treffen wir Entscheidungen unter Risiko? Was geschieht bei Schizophrenie oder Epilepsie? Und wie beeinflusst unsere Umwelt die Gesundheit des Gehirns?

Die öffentlichen Vorträge finden jeweils von 19.30 bis 21.00 Uhr im Grossen Hörsaal des Zentrums für Lehre und Forschung (ZLF) an der Hebelstrasse 20 in Basel statt.

How do we actually measure the world we live in, and why have scientists decided that it is time to redefine the fundamentals of measurement itself? This is the topic of a lecture by American physicist and Nobel Prize laureate Prof. Dr. William D. Phillips.

In this lecture, Nobel Prize winner Prof. Dr. William D. Phillips explores the most radical transformation of the International System of Units (SI) since its origins in the French Revolution. Instead of relying on physical artefacts, all base units are now defined by fixed values of natural constants. The talk explains why this reform was necessary and how it works.

Prof. Dr. William D. Phillips is an American physicist best known for his pioneering work on laser cooling and trapping of atoms. He was awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with Steven Chu and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, for developing techniques that use laser light to slow atoms to extremely low temperatures, enabling breakthroughs in precision measurement and atomic physics.

Phillips spent much of his career at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and has also served as a professor at the University of Maryland, where he is widely respected for both his research and his dedication to science education.

We warmly invite you to the launch of the SNSF project “The Battle of Materials: Commodity ‘Research and Propaganda’ and the Road Towards Immoderate Consumption, 1900 – 1980”, led by Prof. Dr. Moritz von Brescius. The launch will be followed by a public lecture by Prof. Erika Rappaport, University of California Santa Barbara, entitled "‘Aims of Industry’: Big Sugar, Public Relations and the Fight for Free Enterprise in Decolonizing Imperial Britain”.

Opening remarks by Prof. Dr. Moritz von Brescius, followed by the public guest lecture. This lecture examines how large multinational corporations invested in the manufacture, trade, and sale of imperial commodities turned to the new field of public relations during the political crises and transformations of the postwar decades. Focusing on “Aims of Industry,” a PR firm/front group backed by the sugar, automobile, and steel industries, it explores how corporate actors battled the Labour government’s planned nationalization of sugar refining by promoting consumer sovereignty and “free enterprise.”

The campaign helped legitimize public relations as a key political technology—mobilized in the metropole, across Empire and Commonwealth, and in newly independent states in Africa and Asia. More broadly, the talk shows how advertising and public relations both profited from and shaped the policies and meanings of decolonization and capitalism from the 1940s to the 1970s.
