Doctoral Studies Immediately Upon Graduation

Students can apply for admission to a doctoral program upon completion of their master degree at the University of Basel. Please proceed as follows:

Required Documents

  • Faculty of Theology

    1. Application by first supervisor to the Doctoral Board to supervise the relevant dissertation (letter)
  • Faculty of Law

    1. Supervision acceptance from prospective first supervisor addressed to the Doctoral Board (special form)
    2. Summary of the intended dissertation project
  • Faculty of Medicine (Dr. med. / Dr. med. dent.)

    1. Acceptance by the responsible professor/lecturer (Privatdozent) confirming that she/he will supervise the relevant dissertation (special form)
    2. Proof of award of federal diploma as physician or dentist
  • Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

    1. Application by first supervisor to the Doctoral Board to supervise the relevant dissertation (special form)
    2. Synopsis of the intended dissertation project
    3. Declaration of doctoral student's time availability for the dissertation with details of time frame
  • Faculty of Science

    1. Acceptance by a Group I member of the faculty or an equivalent person (in accordance with section 9, para. 6 of the doctoral study regulations) to supervise the relevant dissertation including a working title for the intended dissertation project (special form)
  • Faculty of Business and Economics

    1. Application by first supervisor to the Doctoral Board to supervise the relevant dissertation including information on research area of intended dissertation project (special form)
  • Faculty of Psychology

    1. Application by first supervisor to the Doctoral Board to supervise the relevant dissertation (letter)
    2. Brief description of intended dissertation project
    3. Assurance of doctoral student's time availability for the dissertation
  • Institute for Educational Sciences

    1. Application by first supervisor to the Doctoral Board to supervise the relevant dissertation (special form)
    2. Outline of intended dissertation project
    3. Assurance of doctoral student's time availability for the dissertation with details of the time frame (usually 3–4 years)
  • Interfaculty doctorate in Medical and Health Sciences at the Faculties of Medicine and Science

    1. Confirmation by a Group I member of one of the two lead faculties responsible for the doctoral discipline to supervise the relevant dissertation, including a working title for the intended dissertation project (special form)
    2. Brief description of the intended dissertation project
