Torsten Schwede is Professor of Structural Bioinformatics at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel and Research Group Leader at the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics. Since 2018 he serves as Vice President for Research and is responsible for Career Advancement, Technology Transfer (Unitectra), National and International Cooperation, the Grants Office, Digital Research Infrastructures (sciCORE Center for Scientific Computing, CeDA Center for Data Analytics), Research Networks, and Open Science.

Torsten Schwede (born 1967) studied chemistry at the University of Bayreuth and the University of Freiburg. After completing his doctorate in structural biology (protein crystallography), he conducted research at the global pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline in Geneva. In 2021 he was appointed professor at the University of Basel. He does research and teaches at the Biozentrum on structural bioinformatics with a focus on protein structure prediction. Within the SPHN Swiss Personalized Health Network Initiative, he was involved in the development of a national health data infrastructure in Switzerland. Torsten Schwede is, among other activities, a member of the Foundation Council of the SNSF and of various international Scientific Advisory Boards.
