ERC News & Events

A lot is going on around the ERC Grants in the coming months. New deadlines are coming up in autumn and early next year, the Grants Office has organized an ERC Information Event for University of Basel researchers and other events are already scheduled. Here we provide you with an overview of what you can look forward to in the coming weeks and months and a short summary of the ERC event on June 10 at the Kollegienhaus.

ERC Starting and Consolidator Grants

With the new work programme for the calls 2027, the ERC will introduce new eligibility windows for ERC Starting and Consolidator Grants. The Starting Grant will be open to all researchers directly after their PhD until 10 years after, and the Consolidator Grant will be open for researchers between 5 and 15 years after their PhD. Researchers who are in the overlapping period of Starting and Consolidator will have to decide which program fits better to their current career status.

Deadlines:

  • ERC Starting Grant: The call is expected to open in July, and the deadline will be in October.
  • ERC Consolidator Grant: This call’s deadline will be in January 2027.

ERC Advanced Grant

The ERC Advanced Grant 2026 call is now open and the submission deadline is on 27 August. If you are planning to apply and haven’t been in touch, please send us a short note. Proposals should be announced in the Grants Tool at least two weeks prior to the deadline.

ERC Plus Grant

The ERC Plus Grant is a new funding opportunity for transformative research. It provides up to 7 Mio EUR for 4-7 years to researchers of any career stage. The deadline is 2 September 2026.

Grants Office’s ERC Information Event

On June 10, the Grants Office organized an in-person ERC Information Event for researchers at the University of Basel. We started with an overview of the different ERC Grants, their specificities, the deadlines and what is expected from applicants.

The Introduction to ERC was followed by a Panel discussion with ERC Starting Grantee Prof. Sabine Rumpf, ERC Consolidator Grantee Prof. Claudia Keller-Valsecchi, two-time ERC Advanced Grantee and experienced ERC evaluator Prof. em. Christian Schönenberger and former ERC Synergy Grantee Prof. Ivan Martin.

We were very happy to see so many of you in the audience. Questions from the audience helped to highlight the importance of:

  • selection of the evaluation panel,
  • Choosing the right time to apply
  • planning enough time to write the proposal
  • choosing the right topic for your ERC project
  • the importance of preliminary data
  • crucial coordination between applicants for the collaborative ERC Synergy Grants

Last but not least the topic of Swiss participation was discussed. For projects to be hosted in Switzerland, access to the Horizon Europe including the ERC Calls is guaranteed for the moment. However, for the next framework program starting in 2028, association of Switzerland is still to be negotiated.
