Featuring A Night We Held Between (2024, Noor Abed), letter to a friend (2019, Emily Jacir), Electrical Gaza (2015, Rosalind Nashashibi), and There Was Nothing Here Before (2024, Yvann Yagchi), the screenings at eikones this fall will be followed by discussions with the filmmakers, foregrounding cinema as a space of memory, resistance, and reimagining.

Laut Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO fühlt sich heute jeder sechste Mensch auf dem Globus einsam. Und Einsamkeit schadet der Gesundheit: Das Risko von Hirnschlägen, Diabetes und Herzinfarkten steigt – und auch für die Psyche ist Einsamkeit Gift.

Welche Wege führen aus der Einsamkeit? Hören Sie dazu:

Themenabend mit David Tréfás (UB Basel)

Die erste Zeitung in Basel erschien 1831 mit einem Bericht über die bürgerkriegsähnlichen Zustände rund um die Kantonstrennung. Seither haben Dutzende Zeitungen mehrere Millionen Seiten veröffentlicht. Zeitungen sind komplexe Produkte oft gewinnorientierter Verlage. Diese können tausende Menschen beschäftigen: von Journalist*innen, Redakteur*innen über Anzeigenverkäufer*innen, Drucker*innen, Setzer*innen und Verträger*innen bis zu Verwaltungsrät*innen und vielen weiteren Personengruppen. Leider berichten Zeitungen traditionell nur wenig über ihre eigenen Hintergründe. Geschäftsgeheimnisse werden selten publiziert und noch seltener aufbewahrt. Der Themenabend beleuchtet die verschiedenen Aspekte der zweihundertjährigen Basler Pressegeschichte und berichtet über Gerichtsurteile, Proteste, Fusionen und den ganz normalen Alltag dieser schnelllebigen Branche.

The tax system plays a crucial role in an individual’s decision to undertake risks associated with innovation. It is, therefore, a key determinant of a country’s prosperity.

In her lecture, Prof. Stefanie Stantcheva of Harvard University's Department of Economics will begin by presenting a framework for how tax policy affects innovation. She will then consider the historical evidence of the effects of corporate and personal income taxes on innovations and inventors. Thereby, she will also cover key elements for the design of R&D tax incentives for firms. Finally, she will analyze specific programs targeted at small entrepreneurs and whether they are successful.

Our speaker draws on her pathbreaking academic contributions over the last 10 years, published in the leading journals in economics, such as the American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Econometrica, Journal of Political Economy and Review of Economic Studies.

Speaker and guests on the panel

• Prof. Stefanie Stantcheva (speaker) is Nathaniel Ropes Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University and the founder and director of the Social Economics Lab at Harvard. Stantcheva’s research focuses on the taxation of firms and individuals, as well as how people understand, perceive, and form their attitudes towards economic issues and policies.
• Dr. Severin Schwan (guest on the panel) is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Roche Holding Ltd. He was CEO of the Roche Group from 2008 to 2023.
• Prof. Kurt Schmidheiny (guest on the panel) is Professor of Economics and Applied Econometrics at the University of Basel. He studies how local taxes affect the behavior of households and firms.
• Prof. Rolf Weder (host) is Professor of International Economics at the University of Basel. He is co-leader of a research project on Innovation (innoscape.ch) at the Center for International Economics and Business CIEB.

Lecture Series on Innovation in the Global Economy

The Lecture Series provides a platform for renowned researchers in Business and Economics to present their research results and thoughts on “Innovation in the Global Economy” to a broad audience. The events tackle the challenges of globalization and new technologies for society, policy makers and companies. They also focus on the determinants of innovation in open economies.
