Startup Weekend Basel is a high-energy 54-hour event where participants from diverse backgrounds collaborate to turn ideas into real startup projects. Whether you come with an idea or join a team, you’ll experience the full entrepreneurial journey - from problem discovery and idea validation to business model development and a final pitch in front of a jury of experts.

During the weekend, mentors from the local startup ecosystem guide teams through key topics such as customer validation, prototyping, business planning and pitching, helping participants sharpen their entrepreneurial skills in a supportive and hands-on environment.

Drug Checking ermöglicht die Analyse von psychoaktiven Substanzen, die stets mit einem obligatorischen Beratungs- und Aufklärungsgespräch verbunden ist, und vereint somit Prävention, Früherkennung und Schadensminderung. Drug Checking trägt dazu bei, die Risiken bei Konsum von psychoaktiven Substanzen zu verringern, insbesondere bei der Gruppe von Freizeitdrogenkonsumierenden, die durch klassische Beratungsangebote schwer erreichbar ist. Auch hilft Drug Checking, Trends des Drogenmarktes besser verstehen zu können sowie das Aufkommen neuer psychoaktiver Substanzen (NPS) frühzeitig zu erkennen.

Im Vortrag von Regine Steinauer, Leiterin Abteilung Sucht, Gesundheitsdepartement Kanton Basel-Stadt, werden die Erkenntnisse aus dem ambulanten Angebot «DIBS (Drogeninfo Basel)» und dem mobilen Angebot «Safer Dance Basel» vorgestellt. Es wird gezeigt, worin die Herausforderungen,  Chancen aber auch Grenzen von Drug Checking in der Schweiz liegen.

Der Vortrag findet in der Bibliothek des IRM statt und dauert ca. 45-50 Minuten mit anschliessender Fragerunde. Die Teilnahme ist kostenlos und erfordert keine Anmeldung.

What is the human being – and who is the human being? With this existential question, the 3rd International Conference Ethics of Engineering Life (ICEEL) invites a global audience to an exceptional two-day dialogue on 23–24 March 2026, hosted in Vatican City and accessible worldwide through free online participation.

ICEEL addresses the ethical challenges arising from rapid advances in biomedicine, including gene- and cell-based therapies, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. While these technologies open new possibilities for restoring bodily functions and treating previously incurable diseases, they also raise profound questions about human dignity, identity, responsibility, and the limits of intervention in life itself.

The conference title—Quid est homo? Quis est homo?—articulates a central distinction: What is the human being in biological and technological terms, and who is the human being as a person endowed with dignity, meaning, and moral responsibility. This distinction shapes the entire conference program.

On Ethics of Engineering Life

ICEEL brings together internationally renowned speakers from science, medicine, ethics, religion, philosophy, communication, and the arts. Two keynote lectures frame the central inquiry, while the conference as a whole adopts an exceptional format: instead of traditional lectures, ICEEL is structured almost entirely around moderated panel discussions, fostering direct interdisciplinary exchange rather than monologue.

Beyond the academic debate, ICEEL features distinctive transdisciplinary program elements, including the classical concert When Sound Becomes Dialogue with pianist Alexey Botvinov (Ukraine) and percussionist and actor Burhan Öçal (Turkey), and the public talk Human Body and Cinema with internationally acclaimed filmmaker David Cronenberg (Canada), whose work has profoundly shaped contemporary reflections on the body and technology.

The conference is jointly organized by the NCCR Molecular Systems Engineering (University of Basel & ETH Zurich), the Pontifical Academy for Life (Vatican City), and Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital (Rome).

Was ist der Mensch – und wer ist er? Mit dieser existentiellen Frage lädt die 3. Internationale Konferenz «Ethics of Engineering Life» (ICEEL) zu einem aussergewöhnlichen zweitägigen Dialog am 23. und 24. März 2026 ein. Veranstaltungsort ist die Vatikanstadt, die Teilnahme ist weltweit kostenlos online möglich.

ICEEL widmet sich den ethischen Herausforderungen rasanter biomedizinischer Entwicklungen – darunter Gen- und Zelltherapien, Tissue Engineering und regenerative Medizin. Diese Technologien eröffnen neue Möglichkeiten zur Wiederherstellung von Körperfunktionen und zur Behandlung bislang unheilbarer Erkrankungen. Zugleich werfen sie grundlegende Fragen nach Menschenwürde, Identität, Verantwortung und den Grenzen des Eingreifens in das Leben auf.

Der Konferenztitel «Quid est homo? Quis est homo?» bringt diese Spannung auf den Punkt: Was ist der Mensch in biologischer und technologischer Hinsicht? Und wer ist der Mensch als Person, als Träger von Würde, Sinn und moralischer Verantwortung? Diese Unterscheidung prägt das gesamte Programm der Konferenz.

Über «Ethics of Engineering Life»

ICEEL vereint international renommierte Stimmen aus Wissenschaft, Medizin, Ethik, Religion, Philosophie, Kommunikation und Kunst. Zwei Keynote Lectures rahmen die zentrale Fragestellung. Das Konferenzformat ist dabei bewusst ungewöhnlich: Statt klassischer Vorträge steht der moderierte interdisziplinäre Dialog im Zentrum. In Paneldiskussionen treten Fachleute unterschiedlicher Disziplinen direkt miteinander ins Gespräch.

Über den akademischen Diskurs hinaus bietet ICEEL besondere transdisziplinäre Programmpunkte, darunter das klassische Konzert «When Sound Becomes Dialogue» mit dem Pianisten Alexey Botvinov (Ukraine) und dem Percussionisten und Schauspieler Burhan Öçal (Türkei) sowie der öffentliche Talk «Human Body and Cinema» mit dem international renommierten Regisseur David Cronenberg (Kanada).

Veranstaltet wird die Konferenz gemeinsam vom NCCR Molecular Systems Engineering (Universität Basel & ETH Zürich), der Päpstlichen Akademie für das Leben (Vatikanstadt) und dem Kinderkrankenhaus Bambino Gesù (Rom).

La SEF, l’Alliance française et la Fondation Beyeler sont partenaires de la conférence « Zola / Cézanne : un dialogue de sourds ? » de Stéphane Guégan et Robert Kopp. Les membres qui ne viendront qu’à la conférence, sans visiter le musée, auront un accès libre à partir de 18h15. Ils devront annoncer à la caisse du musée qu’ils sont membres de la SEF.
