Mission Statement
The University of Basel was founded in 1460, modeled on the universities of Bologna and Paris in the context of European humanism. It is the oldest university in Switzerland and one of the oldest in Europe. As a distinguished university with strong faculties, we offer programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, with a distinct focus on life sciences and medicine.

Organization
Under the University Council, the Rectorate manages all university-wide affairs. The Rectorate consists of the Rector, the three Vice Rectorates for Research, Teaching, and People & Culture, as well as the two Directorates for Finance and Infrastructure & Operations.

Alumni
AlumniBasel is the University of Basel’s cross-disciplinary alumni association. Membership is open to anyone who has graduated from the university. Lecturers, emeritus professors, and recipients of honorary doctorates from the university are all welcome to join the AlumniBasel family.
