The University of Basel is run with flat hierarchies and lean management bodies with appropriate decision-making powers. An efficient administration creates space for creativity and innovation.

  • Mission

The University of Basel is an internationally networked research university with a focus on life sciences and medicine. Since 1460, it has united the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.

It stands for excellent research, research-oriented teaching, critical thinking, and targeted support for young scholars. Funded by the supporting cantons, the federal government, and third-party contributions, the university offers attractive working conditions, promotes diversity, and acts responsibly and sustainably.

  • Vision

Our goal is to remain one of the best research universities worldwide and to make important contributions to research and social development through scientific knowledge and innovation. As a distinguished university, we connect the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, fostering close exchange between academia and the public. Our teaching reflects current developments and supports students along their academic journey.

  • Diversity & Inclusion

Practicing a culture of diversity means that these values are both clearly visible and understood as self-evident by the University of Basel and its members. Active diversity management promotes a culture of diversity in studies, research and administration and is characterized by freedom from both discrimination and accessibility barriers. It is equal-opportunity-aware and family-friendly.

  • Human Resources

The Human Resources (HR)  unit advises and supports members of the university, as well as faculties and departments, in all personnel-related matters.

  • Leadership & Development

The Leadership & Development unit is responsible for supporting all employees and organizational units in their professional development, as well as in challenging situations that may arise in their daily work at the University of Basel.
