The Coal Challenge – Climate Change, Employment, and Energy Politics
Public event with panel discussion
While we enjoyed the cozy and glistening holiday season, some might have wondered where the electricity needed to make this happen comes from. In many countries, coal-fired power generation still makes up an important part of the generation mix. In others, a great portion of investments and pensions go into fossil fuel industries. While policies and investment patterns are changing in some places, this is not the case everywhere.
At our international symposium on 22 January 2020, we will discuss a changing investment landscape in the light of national decisions on coal in advanced industrialized countries. The focus of the debate will include the constellations under which the relevant stakeholders (energy companies, trade associations, local governments, NGOs, etc.) can or cannot agree on pathways to phase out coal.
We will especially focus on the role of local coal industries, their positioning in global resource trade, and the perspectives for employees in times of structural change. Ultimately, sustainable and politically feasible coal policies are not possible without addressing these challenges. With a renowned keynote speaker from Canada and dynamic international experts representing think tanks, international organizations, business and academia, the public event promises to become an exciting gathering that you should not miss.
