The two supporting cantons, Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, make the largest contribution to the university’s funding, providing 346.6 million Swiss francs.

The university generates a significant portion of its revenue through competitively acquired external funding: this amounts to 194.3 million Swiss francs, or 25.2 percent of total revenue.
Expenses by faculty
Over 75 per cent of operating expenses are attributable to the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science.
