Following last year's success, Personalized Health Basel launched a second Open Innovation Challenge in 2026, together with DayOne – Healthcare Innovation and the University Hospital Basel. The aim was to co-develop interoperable, openEHR-based digital health solutions that improve clinical workflows, raise data quality and contribute to better patient outcomes.

After an intense exploration phase with over 140 participants, 45 projects submitted and a competitive selection process, five teams were chosen to tackle real-world healthcare challenges using openEHR!

Over three months, the five finalist teams worked closely with clinicians at USB and with the USB clinical modelling team. This collaboration showed what is possible when users in the hospital help developers shape from the very beginning the solution they need.

At PHB, we believe that open standards such as openEHR International are key to unlocking the full value of clinical data. Vendor-neutral, standardised data remains usable long after any individual application has been replaced. It benefits not only a single hospital but the entire health ecosystem.

At the Demo Day, on 19 October 2026, the teams presented their solutions and shared what they had learned along the way. We would like to thank all five teams for their outstanding work:

Despite the challenges they faced, each team demonstrated how much can be achieved in a short time when dedication meets real clinical needs and ideas are tested in a real hospital setting. We also thank the jury for their careful evaluation and valuable feedback.

The CHF 10,000 award went to Treetop Medical for its Smart SOPs solution. In addition, DayOne awarded a special prize to OncoBoard: a tailored support package to help bring its solution to the next stage. Congratulations to both teams! 👏

This challenge would not have been possible without the clinicians at USB, who generously gave their time and shared their everyday experience with the teams. Special thanks go to Maria Sol Fustiñana from the USB Clinical Modelling Team, whose support was invaluable from start to finish!

A very warm thank you to DayOne – Healthcare Innovation for being such a wonderful partner once again, and to Better, x-tention, Tieto Caretech, and OWT - a Swisscom company for believing in this challenge and giving the teams their time, expertise and support throughout. Thank you all! 🤝

Demo Day is not the finish line. We look forward to staying in touch with all five teams and seeing how their solutions develop in the future. Stay tuned for the next edition! 🚀

🎉 PHB is thrilled to announce the winner of the PHB Translational Award 2026! 🎉

Also this year, we received numerous outstanding and innovative proposals, and we would like to sincerely thank all applicants for their interest and the time invested in preparing their submissions. While we were only able to fund one project, the high level of engagement and quality of the proposals were really impressive!

👏 We are very pleased to congratulate Dr. Matthias Mutke & Dr. Tobias Nellessen from the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the USB. 👏

The 2026 award will support part of their position over a 12-month period starting June 1, 2026, enabling them to dedicate time away from clinical duties to focus on this innovative project:

'AI in Real-world Radiology: Prospective Imaging Evaluation of Detection Support and Opportunistic Screening'

🎉 COMPASS, the project awarded with the PHB Translational Award 2025, is ready for rollout! 🎉

COMPASS is a concrete implementation of personalized health principles at the University Hospital Basel (USB), fusing multi-modal clinical data to support individualized oncology care at a leading Swiss academic centre.

It enables, for the first time, a comprehensive and integrated overview of oncology patients treated at USB, fusing all available patient related information into a single structured display. Clinicians can rapidly comprehend both the clinical and disease trajectory of individual patients, substantially reducing preparation time prior to consultations and tumor board discussions. Information previously distributed across multiple disconnected systems is now immediately and simultaneously accessible.

Congratulation Dr. Benjamin Thiele from the Oncology Department at USB, and Ismael Embaby and Victor Parmar, from the D&ICT at USB, for the great collaborative work and achievement!
