Research Fund of the University of Basel
The University of Basel supports interdisciplinary collaborative projects and strategic and interdisciplinary projects of its researchers as well as scientific activities of recognized research networks with contributions from the Research Fund. The relevant calls for applications are intended for researchers at the University of Basel who require temporary support in an area of strategic importance to the university.
Start-up funding for interdisciplinary collaborative projects (new)
The University of Basel’s new research funding program supports the establishment of interdisciplinary collaborative projects, thereby laying the foundation for the innovative research priorities of tomorrow. The seed funding aims to successfully prepare applications for competitive external funding from national and international funding agencies (e.g., NCCR, ERC Synergy, or equivalent).
Evaluation Criteria
- Scientific quality of the research project
- Interdisciplinary, collaborative, network-oriented, and inter-institutional approach
- The research project is novel, ground-breaking, and transformative
- Scientific qualifications and excellence of the applicants
Application submission
The Call for Proposals for collaborative projects is open to researchers in Groups I and II and relevant consortia. Applications may be submitted at any time. Please refer to the Information Sheet for submitting applications for interdisciplinary collaborative projects. Each project must be registered in the Grants Tool of the University of Basel prior to application.
Seed funding: up to a maximum of CHF 100,000 per consortium.

Start-up funding for large national and international projects (strategic project funding)
This Call for Proposals allows professors or group leaders who are preparing a proposal for a major research project as principal investigators (e.g., ERC or Horizon Europe) to apply for seed funding. In addition, funding is available to support the implementation of an innovative interdisciplinary project.
Application submission
Applications can be submitted on February 1 and September 1. Please note the details in the Information Sheet on application submission for strategic research projects. Each project must be registered in the Grants Tool of the University of Basel prior to application.
Seed funding: up to a maximum of CHF 50,000.

Promotion of scientific activities of recognized research networks of the University of Basel
Established research networks can apply for support from the Research Fund for specific scientific activities (e.g. organization of conferences and symposia, guest lectures, lecture series, visiting scientist programs, workshops, scientific retreats, scientific outreach activities). Applications can be submitted at any time and must be registered in the Grants Tool of the University of Basel.
Application submission
An Application for recognition of a research network can be submitted to the Research Office by at least five members of Group I or II of the University of Basel from at least two different departments. An Application for the extension of a research network can also be submitted to the Research Office. Further information can be found in the Guidelines for University Research Networks.

Innovation Funding
The Innovation Office is the university's central point of contact for the topics of innovation and entrepreneurship. It promotes a dynamic culture of innovation at the University of Basel and coordinates the various support services for innovation projects and spin-offs at the university.

The Research Fund of the University of Basel provides start-up financing for the preparation of applications for interdisciplinary collaborative projects or strategic research projects:
• CHF 100,000 to prepare proposals for collaborative projects such as ERC Synergy or NCCR
• CHF 50,000 to prepare proposals for strategic projects such as ERC Starting, Advanced, or Consolidator Grants

What is the deadline for research fund applications?
Research fund applications for interdisciplinary collaborative projects (e.g., ERC Synergy) may be submitted at any time.
Research fund applications for strategic and interdisciplinary projects (e.g., ERC, Horizon Europe) can be submitted on February 1 & September 1 of each year.

Use of funds for applications for collaborative and strategic projects:
- Salary for a staff member (i.e. study nurse, lab/technical assistant, etc.)
- Funds for leave of absence
- Project-relevant material resources
Use of funds for applications submitted by recognized research networks at the University of Basel for scientific activities:
