What happens in the brain when simply hearing becomes listening? To answer this question, researchers at the University of Basel have traced the neuronal fingerprint of the two types of sound processing in the mouse brain.
At the Biozentrum of the University of Basel two new professors have been appointed: Professor Knut Drescher as Associate Professor of Microbiology and Biophysics, and Professor Anissa Kempf as Assistant Professor of Neurobiology. Furthermore, the University Council has promoted five lecturers and appointed three adjunct professors.
Noise is not the same as noise – and even a quiet environment does not have the same effect as white noise. With a background of continuous white noise, hearing pure sounds becomes even more precise, as researchers from the University of Basel have shown in a study in Cell Reports. Their findings could be applied to the further development of cochlear implants.
