The University of Basel develops its university-wide strategy on behalf of its supporting cantons for two consecutive four-year performance periods. The strategy provides an important basis for the university’s request for a four-year global budget for each of the subsequent two performance periods.

The strategy aims to outline the university’s future direction, the challenges it faces and the measures it intends to prioritize. It serves as a guide both externally, for political and societal stakeholders, and internally, for the university’s organizational units and members.

Over the coming weeks, the designated internal working groups will be established, and the faculties will be informed about the process and their specific roles. In addition to the work carried out in various subprojects, the faculties will help develop the strategy and will be invited to outline potential developments in their respective areas.

A consolidated draft of the strategy is expected by fall 2027. It will then be submitted to the Senate for consultation before being approved by the University Council. The new strategy must be finalized by spring 2028 at the latest. The University of Basel will subsequently prepare its funding request to the two supporting cantons, Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, for the 2030–2033 performance period.

Promotion in the Department of History

The University Council has promoted Prof. Dr. Julia Tischler to full professor, effective February 1, 2027. Tischler was appointed tenure-track assistant professor of African history at the University of Basel in 2015 and promoted to associate professor in 2020.

Her research combines African history, global history and African studies. She has established a distinctive research profile and a strong record of successful collaborations, particularly with African researchers and institutions. She has also taken on key responsibilities in university governance, including serving as Head of the Department of History and Co-Speaker of the Center for African Studies.
