New professor of child and adolescent psychiatry

The University Council has appointed Professor Gertraud Gradl-Dietsch clinical professor of child and adolescent psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine. She will also take over as director of the Clinic for Children and Adolescents at the University Psychiatric Clinics Basel (UPK).

Gertraud Gradl-Dietsch is currently an attending physician at the University Hospital Essen in the Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy. She will take up her position in the University of Basel’s Faculty of Medicine on 1 June 2026.

Gradl-Dietsch studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. She earned her doctorate from RWTH Aachen in 2009 and initially worked in the field of orthopedics and trauma surgery. She passed the specialist examination in this subject in 2014. In 2022, she was recognized as a specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy, and in 2024, she adapted her habilitation to the subject of child and adolescent psychiatry.

Focus on metabolic and hormonal changes

In her scientific research, Gertraud Gradl-Dietsch focuses on the neurobiological mechanisms of anorexia nervosa. A key area of her work involves investigating metabolic and hormonal changes associated with weight loss. Her other research interests include virtual reality in therapy, training and continuing education, as well as issues related to sports psychiatry and treatment expectations for depressive disorders.

She has extensive clinical experience, including in acute psychiatry and in the treatment of autism spectrum disorders, tic disorders and psychotic disorders in children and adolescents. With regard to the further development of care, she identifies particular potential in early intervention and innovative treatment models such as home-treatment approaches and inpatient-equivalent treatment for eating disorders.
