New Professor of Neurosurgery
The University Council has appointed Professor Gregor Hutter as Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at the Faculty of Medicine.

Professor Gregor Hutter will take up his new position on 1 October 2026. He has led a research group at the University of Basel and served as a senior physician in the Department of Neurosurgery at University Hospital Basel since 2018.
Hutter studied medicine at the University of Zurich, where he received his doctorate in medicine in 2005 and his doctorate in molecular biology in 2008. In 2021, he obtained his habilitation in neurosurgery at the University of Basel. From 2018 to 2024, he held an SNSF professorship funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
His clinical and research career has included positions at University Hospital Basel, Lucerne Cantonal Hospital and Stanford University, where he worked as a Visiting Instructor from 2014 to 2016. During his studies, he also completed a research stay at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Hutter’s research focuses on glioblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumor in adults. He and his research group investigate how the body’s own immune cells in the tumor microenvironment can be influenced to attack tumor cells. Another focus is the development of novel cellular immunotherapies such as CAR T-cells and genetically modified macrophages. The aim is to translate new treatment approaches from the laboratory into clinical application as quickly as possible.
