Founded in 1930, the Econometric Society is an international association dedicated to advancing economic theory in its relation to statistics and mathematics. It publishes Econometrica, one of the most prestigious journals in economics, organizes annual scientific conferences around the world and honors internationally renowned economists by electing them as Fellow of the Econometric Society.

In this year's elections, Georg Nöldeke was the first professor working at the University of Basel to be honored since the association was founded. He is now one of four Fellows of the Econometric Society who teach and conduct research at a Swiss university. There are more than 800 Fellows of the Econometric Society worldwide, including almost all of the still-living winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics.
