Andrea Schenker-Wicki named Honorary Senator of the University of Freiburg

The 2026 Dies Universitatis at the University of Freiburg focused on the tenth anniversary of “Eucor – The European Campus” as a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC). Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Andrea Schenker-Wicki, President of the University of Basel, was awarded the title of Honorary Senator.

Under the theme “Internationality as a Strategy for the Future – Universities in a Time of Global Change,” the University of Freiburg paid special tribute to the 10th anniversary of the EGTC “Eucor – The European Campus.” With the establishment of the EGTC in 2016, Eucor became the first European university network to have a permanent, operational legal structure with shared governance, strategy and a secretariat.

During the Dies Universitatis ceremony, the Rector of the University of Freiburg, Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein, conferred the title of Honorary Senator of the University of Freiburg upon the Eucor President and President of the University of Basel, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Andrea Schenker-Wicki. She praised Schenker-Wicki’s long-standing commitment as Eucor President and emphasized her importance as a close partner of the University of Freiburg, including her membership on its International Advisory Board.

“As the University of Freiburg, we consider ourselves fortunate to have Ms. Schenker-Wicki advising us on strategic issues related to internationalization,” said Krieglstein. “By presenting this award, we are expressing what has long characterized our collaboration: mutual respect, trust, and a shared commitment to actively shaping the future of our universities within the European context.”

Focus on Cross-Border Collaboration

Prior to the award ceremony, a panel discussion was held on the topic of “Cross-Border Collaboration in Times of Global Crises.” Participants in the discussion included Kerstin Krieglstein (University of Freiburg), Andrea Schenker-Wicki (University of Basel), Michel de Mathelin (University of Strasbourg), Alain Dieterlen (University of Haute-Alsace), and Thomas Hirth (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology).

The discussion centered on the importance of trust-based cooperation within Eucor, the stability of the network in a changing international environment, and the long-term sustainability of joint European higher education structures.
