In his lecture, Philip Grant will explain the role and value of the concept of universal jurisdiction in the fight against International Crimes, genocide or war crimes. He will explore recent trends and developments in universal jurisdiction cases, both in general and with regard to Switzerland specifically.
Moreover, Philip Grant will provide insights from practice into how universal jurisdiction works concretely and what challenges arise in the investigation and prosecution of cases based on universal jurisdiction. Lastly, he will address the role of NGOs in the fight against international crimes.
Dr. Philip Grant, LL.M., is the Executive Director of TRIAL International, a non-governmental organisation fighting impunity for international crimes (genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, torture, enforced disappearances) and supporting victims in their quest for justice. Philip Grant founded the NGO in 2002 and was its first President.
Prior to joining TRIAL International, Philip worked as an attorney in a progressive law firm in Geneva (Switzerland), of which he became a partner. He has been active since his teens in various organizations working on human rights issues, racism, refugees and the right to conscientious objection.
