Thomas Grob Appointed new Vice President for Education at the University of Basel

Professor Thomas Grob has been appointed the new Vice President for Education at the University of Basel. On the evening of Wednesday, March 1, the Senate of the University of Basel elected the 56-year-old Slavic specialist for a four-year term. The University Council has approved this decision. The new appointment coincides with a reorganization of the Vice President’s Offices.

02 March 2017

Thomas Grob has been a professor of Slavic and General Literature at the University of Basel since 2009 and, since summer 2016, he has also been the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. As Vice President for Education, he will be responsible for, inter alia, teaching development, Student Services, educational technologies, academic teaching, the language center and postgraduate continuing education.

During his almost 10 years in Basel, Grob has helped shape the University of Basel’s academic and administrative processes, and has proven himself to be a committed, solution-oriented and articulate leader. He will take up his new position at the beginning of the 2017 fall semester.

Thomas Grob was born in 1961 in Olten and completed a degree in German Studies, Russian Studies and Philosophy at the University of Zurich, where he obtained a doctorate in Slavic studies in 1993. In 2003, he qualified as a professor at the University of Konstanz, holding subsequent interim and visiting professorships in Austria and Switzerland before taking up the professorship in Basel in 2009. In addition to his academic work, he is also involved in the university administration through his role on various committees.

Two instead of three Vice President’s Offices

At the end of the spring semester, the current Vice President for Teaching and Development, Professor Maarten J.F.M. Hoenen, will retire from the President’s Office after four years but continue his professorship in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. At the same time, Professor Hedwig J. Kaiser will step down after two terms as Vice President for Education. As part of a restructuring, the Vice President’s Offices at the University of Basel will be reorganized into the two traditional areas of education and research; Professor Edwin Constable will remain Vice President for Research.
