Work Conditions

The University of Basel offers an open, creative and productive working and thinking culture. In this context, the Personal Integrity Office launched a university-wide campaign in 2023 to raise awareness of the Code of Conduct and thus support and secure an appreciative working culture. In addition, the University of Basel started the re-certification process with the “We Pay Fair” label received in 2022.
Personal Integrity
In the spring semester of 2023, an internal university campaign on the Code of Conduct was launched to raise awareness about the values of the University of Basel and the Personal Integrity Office. Since the campaign, the Code of Conduct has also been continuously integrated into processes, for example by drawing attention to its importance at various information events for new students or employees. In addition to this internal campaign, the University of Basel also took part in the first national day of action against sexual harassment at universities in 2023.
Since the launch of the campaign, the number of requests for advice from the Personal Integrity Office has increased continuously. In order to improve the advisory and support processes, the regulations for the protection of personal integrity were revised in 2024 and will come into force in 2025. As part of this revision, the Personal Integrity Office will be upgraded to a specialist unit and staffed with a second person in order to have more resources available for prevention work in addition to the advisory work.
Social sustainability in the University Library
The Historical Collections of the University Library Basel are particularly committed to social sustainability. They regularly employ community service workers and interns from the Bürgerspital Basel. Among other things, the Bürgerspital Basel promotes the work integration of people with disabilities. The "Forum HiSa" was also set up for employees of the Historical Collections, an exchange of ideas or projects relating to the collections that takes place four to five times a year. The aim is to increase employee participation in the workplace.
University Sports
University Sports plays an important role in promoting the health and work-life balance of university members and covers a broad spectrum of over 120 disciplines in the areas of sport, exercise and body awareness. In 2023 and 2024, 7,755 and 8,068 course participants were recorded respectively. This means that the pre-Covid pandemic figures were reached again for the first time. Around 66% of participants were students and around 9% were employees of the University of Basel. The remaining participants were mostly alumni of the University of Basel and students from other universities.
Aspiring re-certification “We Pay Fair”
After the University of Basel was awarded the “We Pay Fair” seal of approval in 2022, the Human Resources department will carry out another equal pay analysis in 2025 in collaboration with the University of St. Gallen with the aim of being able to continue the “We Pay Fair” label. The “We Pay Fair” label of the University of St. Gallen recognizes companies that comply with equal pay in accordance with the federal equal pay instrument (Logib).
