Termination (Without Notice)

Termination of employment by mutual agreement

The employment agreement can be terminated at any time by mutual agreement (staff regulations, § 13).

Inability to work due to invalidity

The employment relationship ends automatically with entitlement to a full invalidity pension.

The adjudication of a partial invalidity pension requires that the employment relationship be modified to accommodate the new circumstances (staff regulations, § 14).

Reaching retirement age and retirement

Staff with a permanent position are covered by the Basel Stadt pension fund (PKBS) (see also insurance) and are entitled to collect their pensions when they turn 65 (men and women). Early retirement is possible from the age of 60.

Staff with temporary employment contracts are covered by the Basel-Landschaft pension fund (BLPK) (see also insurance) and are entitled to collect their pensions when they turn 65 (men and women). Early retirement is possible from the age of 58.

The employment relationships always ends on the last day of the month in which the employee reaches the official retirement age.

By mutual agreement and in agreement with the faculty or department, the retirement age can be deferred by up to two years if properly justified.

Any retirement before the official retirement age is possible both at the request of an employee or by order of the university.

Lecturers may be required to complete the semester in which they reach the retirement age by the body responsible for employment.

Death

In the event of a staff member’s death, the university pays his or her full salary for three months after the death, provided the employee has left behind a spouse, registered partner or minor children or, in the absence of such heirs, other dependents (staff regulations, § 41).

We recommend that beneficiaries consult with the HR office.
