Special provisions govern the access of non-Swiss applicants to the Bachelor’s in Medicine as well as the Master’s in Medicine and Master’s in Dental Medicine. These have to be fulfilled in addition to the general requirements:

In accordance with section 21 of the Student Regulations dated 13 November 2019, applicants commence the admission process once their application has been received by the corresponding deadline. Applicants may only apply to one degree program at a time. The following deadlines apply:

The Student Regulations of the University of Basel dated 13 November 2019 decree the following general provisions:

Non-admission (Student Regulations, section 13)

Applicants will be denied admission if they

1. have been definitively excluded from a comparable degree program or degree subject at a Swiss or non-Swiss higher education institution or are no longer permitted to continue their studies in said institution, program or subject
2. have successfully completed a comparable degree program or degree subject
3. have been excluded from another higher education institution for disciplinary reasons
4. have been sentenced for serious crimes that adversely affect or endanger the interests of the University
5. have been found guilty of breach of trust or conduct that adversely affects or endangers the interests of the University.

Should proceedings be commenced or an appeal lodged with a higher court against such a judgement, processing of admission shall be suspended.

Non-admission due to falsified documents (Student Regulations, section 21)

Applicants will not be admitted to/matriculated at the University of Basel if there is good reason to believe that documents submitted with the application have been forged.

Simultaneous matriculation at multiple higher education institutions (Student Regulations, section 20)

Simultaneous matriculation at more than one Swiss higher education institution must be approved by the President’s Office.

Language skills (Student Regulations, section 14)

The principal languages of instruction are German and English. Corresponding language skills are required in order to study successfully.

A non-Swiss higher education institution is recognized by the University of Basel if
Foreign higher education institutions

The conversion of the final grade / the grade average of degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions into the Swiss grading system follows the subsequent formula.

A degree awarded under a former system of regulations (e.g. a lizentiat/licentiate or diplom/diploma) from the University of Basel entitles the holder to admission to a degree program or doctoral studies at the University of Basel only if all currently applicable admission requirements are fulfilled as set out in the relevant study regulations or doctoral study regulations; in particular, the grade awarded must fulfil the current average grade requirements.

If the degree awarded under a former system of regulations was not assigned an average grade and the average grade cannot be calculated, the relevant committee will determine whether the degree is equivalent to the average grade required. Applicants are not entitled to admission based on a Latin grade earned under a former system of regulations.
