«We Pay Fair» label
The University of Basel has been awarded the “We Pay Fair” quality seal by the Competence Centre for Diversity & Inclusion at the University of St. Gallen. A salary analysis demonstrated that the University complies with the constitutional principle of “equal pay for work of equal value”. Thanks to a fair and non-discriminatory salary system.
The seal confirms compliance with pay equality in accordance with the federal Logib instrument.
Salary system
The University of Basel's salary system follows a clear structure. When new employees join the university, Human Resources assigns them to a salary class based on their job description, and their salary level is determined based on the experience relevant to the position.
The university uses 24 salary classes. Each salary grade comprises starting, annual, and biennial levels. The salary grade thus evaluates the position, and the level takes into account professional and relevant non-professional experience.
Wages increase generally occur annually on 1 January. For later start dates, the increase may be deferred. In exceptional cases, the University Council may suspend step increases.
Pension fund
Permanent staff are covered by the pension fund of Basel-Stadt; temporary employees are covered by the Basel-Landschaft pension fund.
Accidents & sickness
Sickness allowance insurance
All employees pay one third of their sickness allowance insurance. AXA provides sickness coverage to the University of Basel. Upon termination of employment, it is possible to transfer over to the individual insurance, without a medical examination, within a period of 90 days.
Accident insurance
Employees working at least 8 hours per week are insured to cover the consequences of occupational and non-occupational accidents. Commuting accidents are considered occupational accidents. In the event of hospitalization due to an accident, private insurance (1st class) applies. The premium for occupational accident insurance as well as the premiums for the supplementary accident insurance are borne entirely by the University of Basel. Employees cover one third of the non-occupational accident insurance premium.
Staff with a weekly workload of less than 8 hours are only insured to cover occupational accidents and must insure themselves against non-occupational accidents.
Wage continuation
After the probationary period, employees who are absent due to sickness or an accident continue to receive salary payments for the duration of their work contract, for a period not exceeding 730 days.
