Giovanni Caforio has had an international career in the healthcare industry spanning more than 35 years. He graduated in medicine and surgery in Italy in 1988, and has held senior leadership positions at Abbott Laboratories and Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) in several European countries and the US. He was CEO of BMS from 2015 to 2023 and Chair of the company’s board of directors from 2017 to 2024. Giovanni Caforio currently serves on the Stryker Corporation board and has been the board chair at Novartis since 2025.
Founded in 1870, the “Statistisch-Volkswirtschaftlichen Gesellschaft Basel” (Statistical and Economic Society of Basel, SVG) organizes six lectures per year on hot topics from the worlds of business, science, politics, and society. It invites high-profile national and international speakers to these events.
