Our brain and mind are tightly connected with our body. Blood brings nutrients to the brain and hormones to every organ. How do blood, brain, and mind affect each other in health and disease? And what can science, medicine and technology do about it?
The fascinating dance of blood vessel formation
Maria Kotini, Postdoctoral researcher at Biozentrum, University of Basel
Blood vessels serve as the intricate routes of our circulatory system, crucial for delivering oxygen and nutrients to all tissues and organs. Yet the formation of blood vessels remains a captivating mystery. In this presentation, we delve into the cutting-edge realm of real-time live imaging and we will explore the tools which allow us to catch a glimpse into the fascinating world of embryonic development. Through the lens of advanced microscopy and visualisation techniques, we trace the precisely choreographed cell movements that are essential to form these vital conduits, illuminating the extraordinary process that underpins our circulatory system's development.
Nutritional Psychiatry: How the Food Affects Our Mental Health
Ilya Smolensky, Postdoctoral researcher at Department of Biomedicine, University of Basel
Why can unhealthy food exacerbate anxiety and impair cognitive functions? How does the Mediterranean diet alleviate symptoms of depression and schizophrenia when medications are ineffective? What conditions besides epilepsy might be treated with the ketogenic diet? Answers to these questions are sought by nutritional psychiatry, a young interdisciplinary science studying the relationship between diet and mental health. This research involves biochemical experiments, animal models of mental disorders, observational studies of people with different dietary habits, and randomized clinical trials. I will overview what is currently known in this exciting and rapidly evolving field.

Pint of Science Festival
Pint of Science brings some of the most brilliant scientists to your local pub to share their latest research and findings with you. You don't need any prior knowledge, and this is your chance to meet the people responsible for the future of science (and have a pint with them). The festival takes place annually over three days in the month of May simultaneously in over 400 cities across the world. Pint of Science Switzerland is a not-for-profit association run by volunteers scientists and science enthusiasts.
The University of Basel calendar lists events offered by the University of Basel, its numerous units, and accredited student organizations and associated institutions. They address a larger audience, are public and open to all. As a rule, admission is free.
You can also have your event listed in the Calendar of Events, provided it meets the above criteria. To do so, send the title, short text, time, place, organizer, link to website and, if available, photo (JPG) and program flyer (PDF) to E-Mail: agenda@unibas.ch
