“In search of pharmacoperfection“
Clinical pharmacy focuses on optimizing drug treatment in patients. It aims to achieve optimal, safe, and effective drug treatment for patients in all health care settings. Given their expert knowledge of the therapeutic use of drugs, clinical pharmacists are perfectly equipped to provide a leading role in delivering personalized medicine to patient care. Historically personalizing drug dosing was accomplished by measuring drug levels in the blood. However, the genomics revolution now also allows the use of genomic information to guide drug dosing. Indeed, pharmacogenomics is widely recognized as one of the first clinical applications of personalized medicine. It aims to optimize drug treatment by personalising the dose and drug selection based on a better understanding of the genetic variation that is causal for the variability in drug response, typically via alterations in a drug's pharmacokinetics (e.g. metabolism) or via modulation of a drug's pharmacodynamics (e.g. the drug target). After decades of discovery, pharmacogenomics is moving into clinical practice. However, while the available test help to improve the outcomes of drug treatment, they should be considered the tip of the iceberg both with respect to improvement of patient care as well as scientifically. In this seminar I will present my work that is aimed at improving our ability to predict drug pharmacokinetics, response, and toxicity as well as translating this to patient care.
Hosts: Dr. C. Stäuble / Prof. S. Allemann, Pharmaceutical Care
