FAQ - ADAM (ILIAS)

This is a list of frequently asked questions about our learning platform ADAM (ILIAS), which can be used for online teaching as well as for online exams and certificates.

  • What is the maximal file size that can be uploaded to ADAM?

On ADAM the capacities were expanded and the maximum size of files for upload is now 300 MB, i.e. twice the initial size.

  • How can I grant access to videos on ADAM?

Videos can be made accessible via ADAM in various ways. For capacity reasons, we recommend that on ADAM you only provide links to your videos (instructions: https://adam.unibas.ch/goto.php?target=wiki_545096_Weblink). For storage, please use SWITCHdrive or SWITCHtube. How to publish videos on these platforms can be found in this instruction in chap. 4.3 and 4.4, respectively.

How to use ADAM and Panopto together to record and share videos is explained in this instruction.

In case you have sensitive data, you can upload them to ADAM. The instructions can be found here: https://tales.nmc.unibas.ch/en/online-lehrveranstaltungen-17/upload-your-media-98/upload-files-to-adam-601. On ADAM the capacities were expanded and the maximum size of files for upload is now 300 MB, i.e. twice the initial size.

  • Is it possible to use the mailing-system of ADAM to send an assignment to all students simultaneously?

Yes, you can send a message to all participants of your ADAM workspace. But there are three main disadvantages:

    1. You cannot attach large files.
    2. There may be time delays.
    3. You cannot check for sure whether the message has been properly received.

We highly recommend using MS Outlook or any other e-mail client for sending and receiving messages regarding exams. The copy in the Sent-box is the proof for having sent it to the students. To avoid having to type manually all the e-mail-addresses of participants included in your ADAM-workspace, please proceed as follows:

    1. You can export the e-mail addresses in the tab "Members" with the command "Export Participants".
    2. Click the button "Start CSV-Export".
    3. Choose "Participants Selection".
    4. For Data Types choose only E-Mail.
    5. Export this CSV file by clicking "Start CSV-Export".
    6. Once the export is finished, you can download the file from the export list and open it with Notepad++ (or any text editor) or with Excel (or any spreadsheet software).
    7. Delete all unnecessary information; you finally have a list of only e-mail addresses: email address1, email address2, email address3
    8. Copy this list to the address bar in Outlook (your address as the main recipient, the students cc or bcc, as applicable).

In case you want to send highly individualised e-mails to your students but still via mass mail, you can do that by combining Outlook and Excel. How to do this is explained in this manual: https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/mail-merge-using-an-excel-spreadsheet-858c7d7f-5cc0-4ba1-9a7b-0a948fa3d7d3?omkt=en-GB

Information about the use of unibas e-mail can be found in chapter 3.3 of the Tales course 'Online Exams and Assessments' (https://tales.nmc.unibas.ch/en/online-prufungen-und-leistungsnachweise-18/).

  • For non-European languages, we want to check the handwriting skills of our students. In order to do so, the students should take a picture of the handwritten exam and pass it over to me. What is more suitable for this: unibas-e-mail or ADAM?

With small groups of students, there is no technical reason to have a preference for either e-mail or the ADAM module "folder" (typ "post box") or module exercise. The e-mail-solution has the advantage that everybody is used to it and it is a pragmatic solution. Using ADAM is more laborious (logging in, creating the module, finding the module etc.), but also entails further options such as timing, all files in one place and - in the case of the module exercise - grading.

You can find more information on both options in chapter 3.3 of the Tales course 'Online exams and assessments' https://tales.nmc.unibas.ch/en/online-prufungen-und-leistungsnachweise-18/

  • Can I send urgent and important information to the students via the mail function of ADAM?

No, we strongly advise against doing so. The mail function of ADAM is ideal to keep your students up to date during the semester, but it does neither offer as many options nor the same reliability as a special mail program: when sending mails from ADAM, there may be delays and problems with delivery, for technical reasons.

For important and urgent information, such as exam tasks, we strongly recommend using MS Outlook or any other email client in order to process and control the sending and return of e-mails.
