The prestigious award recognizes Professor Kappos’ decades of leadership, which have been instrumental in reshaping the diagnosis, treatment, and care of MS worldwide. “We are delighted to present the 2025 Charcot Award to Professor Kappos, whose dedication to the cause of MS research has directly improved outcomes for people living with MS across the globe,” said Dr. Lydia Makaroff, Executive Director of MSIF.

Ludwig Kappos is an internationally renowned neurologist and one of the most influential figures in modern MS research. Born in Erlangen, Germany, and raised in Athens, Greece, he earned his doctorate and a master’s degree in clinical psychology from the University of Würzburg. Early in his career, he led the Max Planck Society’s clinical MS research group in Würzburg before moving to the University of Basel in 1990. Until 2020, he was Professor of Neurology at the University of Basel and Chief Physician at the University Hospital Basel. Since 2019, he has headed the Research Center for Clinical Neuroimmunology and Neuroscience Basel RC2NB, an internationally recognized center of excellence.

The Charcot Award, presented every two years by the MSIF, recognizes a lifetime of outstanding research into the understanding or treatment of MS. It is named after Jean-Martin Charcot, who first diagnosed MS in 1868 and is considered a pioneer of neurology. The award winner will be invited to give the Charcot Lecture at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) meeting. The prize will be officially awarded to Ludwig Kappos there at the end of September 2025.
