New professorship for Theoretical Quantum Optics
Prof. Dr. Daniel Malz is to become the new assistant professor for theoretical quantum optics with a focus on the physics of light-matter interaction. The University Council also appointed nine adjunct professors.
21 October 2025
Daniel Malz is a theoretical physicist and has been an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Copenhagen since 2023. Previously, he held research positions at the Technical University of Munich and the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics. He completed his academic education at the University of Cambridge, earning a PhD in theoretical physics in 2018, after completing a Master of Mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in Natural Sciences.
In his research in quantum technology, he aims to precisely control many-body quantum systems and make them usable for quantum simulations, computation, and measurement technology. His research focuses on the interface between quantum optics, many-body quantum information theory, and tensor networks, spanning topics such as cavity optomechanics, quantum information dynamics in circuits, and collective radiation processes. Malz is also known for advancing the theoretical foundations of quantum simulations and nonreciprocal systems.
Daniel Malz will take up his position as an assistant professor with tenure-track at the Faculty of Science on 1 February 2026.
