The Prix Bartholdi Association awarded its annual prize to Eucor – The European Campus on 9 December 2016 in the Freiburg University Library, thus recognizing the university alliance for its fundamental contribution to cross-border cooperation. The prize was accepted by representatives from the member universities Basel, Freiburg, Upper Alsace, and Strasbourg, as well as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Professor Christoph Gerber of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute and the Department of Physics at the University of Basel has been awarded the 2016 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience together with Professor Gerd Binnig (formerly of IBM Zurich Research Laboratory) and Professor Calvin Quate (Stanford University). The award honors their invention and creation of the first atomic force microscope 30 years ago.
