Her research into the interaction between the individual and their environment and her digital methods for recording everyday processes have shaped modern psychiatry.
Dies talk on institutions
In her talk at the Dies academicus 2025, President Andrea Schenker-Wicki stressed the central importance of institutions for the prosperity of states. Building on the research of Nobel Prize-winning economists Daron Acemoğlu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson, she argued that it is not geography or culture, but efficient political and economic institutions that determine poverty or wealth.
Schenker-Wicki concluded with an appeal to preserve Switzerland’s inclusive institutions – in particular its permeable educational system. These, she said, are the basis for innovation, prosperity and social stability.
First honorary councillor named
For the first time, the University of Basel has named Dr. Peter Lenz an honorary councillor at this year’s Dies academicus. The University of Basel awards the title of honorary councillor to individuals who have rendered outstanding services to the university.
