Catherine Housecroft named British-Swiss Legend
The British-Swiss Chamber of Commerce named Professor Emerita Catherine Housecroft a British-Swiss Legend. This award honors individuals who significantly advance cooperation and mutual understanding between the United Kingdom and Switzerland, emphasizing Housecroft's lasting contribution.

This distinction is part of the BSCC’s British-Swiss Legends initiative, which celebrates individuals whose transformative efforts have significantly strengthened bilateral ties through innovation, leadership, and enduring impact. The award highlights Housecroft's unique role in bridging two nations, exemplifying the initiative’s core values over a career spanning more than four decades of research, teaching, and mentorship.
Housecroft, born in Bradford, developed an early interest in chemistry, earning both her undergraduate and doctoral degrees at the University of Durham. She began her career teaching at the secondary level before pursuing research in the United States, and then returning to the UK as Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Cambridge.
In the early 1990s, she moved to Basel with her husband, Professor Edwin C. Constable, where she established a globally recognized research profile in inorganic chemistry. Her work advanced sustainable energy, focusing on solar energy harvesting and efficient lighting.
Housecroft has published over 600 works and co-authored a widely used inorganic chemistry textbook. She mentored more than 100 doctoral students and championed accessible science education.
The BSCC's recognition of her reflects not only her scientific excellence but also her sustained commitment to chemical education and strengthening academic exchange and collaboration between the UK and Switzerland, which inspires future generations in both countries.
