Voice Messages - Mündliche Nachrichten- und Konfliktkultur in der Frühen Neuzeit
Öffentlicher Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Jan-Friedrich Missfelder, Universität Basel
Wie kann man «zwischen den Zeilen» hören? Im Zuge der neuen Sinnes-Geschichtsforschung beleuchtet Jan-Friedrich Missfelder die Nachrichtenkultur der Vormoderne. Quer durch Europa zirkulieren gedruckte Liedblätter und bekannte Melodien. In Wirtshäusern wird spontan «überlut gsunge», die Obrigkeit fühlt sich bedroht. Ob Nachrichten von Schlachtfeldern oder Spottgedichte auf gegnerische Fürstenhäuser, Themen und Stile sind in grosser Bandbreite vertreten. Im Vortrag von Jan-Friedrich Missfelder wird hörbar, wie sich diese flüchtige Nachrichten- und Konfliktkultur aus überliefertem Schriftgut rekonstruieren und deuten lässt. Und es wird laut darüber nachgedacht, was unsere heutigen Voice Messages oder Sprachnachrichten damit zu tun haben.
Jan-Friedrich Missfelder ist SNF-Förderungsprofessor für Geschichte der Frühen Neuzeit am Departement Geschichte der Universität Basel. Er leitet das Forschungsprojekt «Macht der Stimme. Medien der Vokalität in der Frühen Neuzeit». Er studierte Geschichte, Musikwissenschaft und Politikwissenschaft in Göttingen, Leicester (GB) sowie an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und wurde dort 2008 mit einer Arbeit zur
politischen Ideengeschichte Frankreichs um 1600 promoviert.
Nach der Veranstaltung gibt es einen Apéro und Zeit für persönliche Begegnungen. Eine Anmeldung ist nicht erforderlich. Der Eintritt ist frei. Interessierte sind herzlich willkommen!

T-Zellen: Wie sie den Körper schützen, aber auch bedrohen können
Vortrag von Prof. Jean Pieters im Rahmen der Reihe «Einblicke Biozentrum»
Im Kampf gegen Viren, Bakterien und Krebs stehen sie an vorderster Front: die T-Zellen unseres Immunsystems. Sie sind darauf programmiert, Körperfremdes zu erkennen, zu bekämpfen und so zu heilen. Doch auch transplantierte Spenderorgane werden von ihnen als fremd erkannt und abgestossen. Im Fall von Autoimmunerkrankungen bekämpfen T-Zellen sogar körpereigenes Gewebe und lösen so Krankheiten wie Multiple Sklerose oder Schuppenflechte aus. Erfahren Sie, wann T-Zellen den Körper schützen, wann sie ihm schaden und wie man sie in Schach halten kann.

April 10th, 1809: In a country house in Derbyshire, the garden is uprooted, romantic poets cause chaos, and a young girl makes revolutionary scientific and mathematical discoveries. 200 years later, academics try to piece together the mystery of what happened that day.
Arcadia by Tom Stoppard, written in 1993, is exciting, funny, and nerdy, exploring the relationship between past and present, order and chaos, science and the humanities, Classicism and Romanticism, and a whole lot more! Directed by Melanie Löw and Jonas Biedermann.
Special event: after the show on Sunday 26th, there'll be a Q&A session with the production team and some actors, which is free to attend irrespective of which (if any) performance you attend.
Bar & box office open 60 minutes before show time, doors to the theatre open 30 minutes before show time – you can freely choose your seats. The performance will be in English, and have an approx. runtime of 2.5 hours including intermission.
The Gay Beggars are an independent non-professional theatre company which specialises in the production of plays written in English. Founded by students of the English Seminar in 1941, the Gay Beggars have managed to keep up the long-standing tradition of staging at least one play a year. The late Prof. Rudolf Stamm instigated their use of the marvellous Cellar Theatre, which opened in 1969. In addition to the annual performances in the Cellar Theatre, there have been many performances in other venues in Switzerland and Europe.
People with an insatiable interest in theatre and a reasonably good command of the English language are very welcome to look in and join the Gay Beggars. Though quite demanding and time-consuming, theatre work with the Gay Beggars offers you a brilliant opportunity to get involved in a rewarding activity and get to know other students.
