Confucius Institute at the University of Basel
Founded in 2013 as the first Confucius Institute in German-speaking Switzerland, the Basel Confucius Institute is a collaboration between the University of Basel and the East China Normal University (ECNU). It promotes Chinese culture and language through individual lectures, lecture series and specialized language courses.
As a platform for exchange and communication, the Confucius Institute at the University of Basel aims to share knowledge about the Chinese language and the country's rich culture. Among other things, it offers students with an interest in China grants for an exchange semester or a two-week summer school in Shanghai.
The partnership with the East China Normal University (ECNU) both allows the University of Basel to run a Confucius Institute in Basel and offers a direct link to one of the best universities in China. With around 30,000 students, the ECNU is small in Chinese terms, but is a significant institution from an academic perspective.
The city of Basel has been twinned with Shanghai since 2007, thus enabling exchanges in areas such as life sciences and healthcare.
