New Development and Modification of Degree Programs

The process managed by the Teaching Committee for developing new as well as making substantial changes to existing degree programs has been in place at the University of Basel since 2007. The primary objective is to consider and combine the development of teaching and degree course structures at the University of Basel from different discipline- and field-specific, educational, administrative, legal and strategic perspectives. Starting with local, national and international frameworks and the continuing development of university teaching as well as the tension between competition and accountability, what needs to be taken into consideration are questions about attractiveness, value, function, innovation, cooperation, orientation, profile, coherence, etc.

The timing of the process depends on university-wide administrative dates such as the information day, application for studies, publishing of the academic curriculum for the online course catalog, etc.

Reminder

February

In February, each dean of studies receives a reminder to register projects for developing new degree programs and submit comprehensive change plans by the end of May to the dean of studies of the respective faculty.
 
Minor changes to existing degree programs can be submitted during the current year by notifying the dean of studies of the respective faculty.

Application End of May

The application is completed with this application form, which has to be signed by the dean of studies. The application form is passed on by the responsible dean of studies to the degree program development board.

Harmonization with the master list June

The projects that have been applied for are harmonized by the Teaching Committee and central services.

Drafting the project outline until October

After the harmonization process, the project coordinators receive the project outline form for documenting the following information:

  • Project description (project management,
           participants, location, responsibilities)
  • Defined preconditions (guidelines, resources,
           portfolio, scheduling)
  • Degree program concept (number of
           first-year-students, addes value, impact on
           faculty/university)
  • Costs (financing, teaching, organization)

The project outline must be approved by the faculty and submitted by the dean of studies responsible for developing the degree program.

Approval of the project outline

October / November

After the Vice Rectorate for Teaching & Development has reviewed the project outline, he or she submits it to the Rectorate for approval.

Curriculum planning

until End of March

After the project outline has been approved by the Rectorate, the actual curriculum planning takes place.

Creating or modifying study regulations/course schemes

until End of September

After the content of the curriculum has been worked out, the regulatory frameworks (e.g. cooperation agreement, study regulations, course scheme) are created or modified.

Approval of the regulatory frameworks

October - December

After central services and the faculty have completed their administrative and legal review, the regulatory frameworks are submitted to the faculty, Rectorate and University Council for approval.

Implementation

May - September

The degree program is announced, enrollment takes place, and the new or modified degree program begins.
