Mobility fellowships

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) is committed to promoting junior scholars and provides funding for this purpose. Mobility fellowships for research work at a foreign institution comprise living costs and travel expenses as well as in certain cases expenses incurred by conducting research, registering at the foreign institution and attending conferences.

Fellowships for young scientists and academics

Doc.Mobility fellowships offer doctoral students an excellent opportunity to conduct research at institutes abroad. The Early Postdoc.Mobility and Postdoc.Mobility fellowships are directed to postdoctoral researchers embarking on an academic career.

Doc.Mobility

Doc.Mobility fellowships enable doctoral students to conduct part of their dissertation at a research institution abroad in order to enhance their scientific profile. Doc.Mobility fellowships are awarded in all disciplines.

  • Requirements
    Matriculation as a doctoral student for at least 12 months
    Swiss nationality or valid Swiss permanent residence, stay or cross-border commuter permit
  • Evaluation and decision
    Research Committee of the SNSF at the University of Basel
  • Start
    earliest three months after submission
  • Duration
    6 months up to a maximum of 18 months.
    If the approved duration of the fellowship is less than the maximum of 18 months, an extension up to the maximum duration may be granted upon request. An extension cannot be guaranteed

Early Postdoc.Mobility

Early Postdoc.Mobility fellowships are addressed to young scientists starting their career after obtaining their doctorate. The fellowships enable researchers to conduct a research stay abroad in order to acquire more in-depth knowledge and enhance their scientific profile. Early Postdoc.Mobility fellowships are awarded in all disciplines.

  • Requirements
    A completed doctorate (PhD) or completion within the next 9 months, or completed medical training with a doctorate (MD) Submission up to 2 years after obtaining the doctorate (medical researchers: up to 6 years after the state examination).
    Swiss nationality or valid Swiss permanent residence, residence or cross-border commuter permit, or marriage resp. registered partnership with a Swiss citizen.
    For foreign researchers: at least 3 years of research activity at a Swiss research institution

    earliest 3 months after submission and/or after obtaining the doctorate
  • Evaluation and decision
    Research Committee of the SNSF at the University of Basel
  • Duration
    usually 18 months; extensions are not possible; a prolongation can be requested via a Postdoc.Mobility fellowship.

Postdoc.Mobility

Postdoc.Mobility fellowships enable experienced scientists who wish to pursue an acadmic career in Switzerland to conduct a stay abroad in order to acquire more in-depth knowledge to enhance their scientific profile. In addition to the fellowship, applicants can request a grant for a reasearch period upon returning to Switzerland. Postdoc.Mobility fellowships are awarded in all disciplines.

  • Requirements
    Doctorate (PhD) or medicial training completed with a doctorate (MD)
    At least one year experience in research as a postdoc.
    Doctorate obtained not more than 3 years prior to application; medical researchers without MD-PhD: submission up to 8 years after the state examination and at least 3 years of clinical activity after the state examination.
    Swiss nationality, holder of valid Swiss permanent residence, residence or cross-border commuter permit, married to a Swiss national or co-habiting with a Swiss national in a registered partnership.
    For foreign nationals: at least 2 years of research activity at a Swiss research institution
  • Evaluation and decision
    The National Research Council of the SNSF is responsible for the assessment of applications and the decision-making.
  • Duration
    The funding period is in principle 24 months (fellowship) and 3 to 12 months (return phase).
