PHB Oncology Cluster

Cancer is a genomic disease that varies in its genetic and epigenetic aberrations between tumors of individual patients with even the same cancer type. The currently prevalent "one size fits all" perception for drug dosing and treatment has been proven to achieve only limited therapeutic success, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive molecular and cellular analysis of the tumor and of the treatment-related changes. The benefit of analysing molecular and cellular features in tumors of individual patients will not only advance clinical drug testing but also substantially improve the development and implementation of rational and personalized treatment strategies for the population.

The goal of our cluster is to create a world-class multidisciplinary center for translational research in Personalized Health medicine in the cancer field. Our cluster brings together all disciplines involved in cancer research in the Basel area relevant to the Personalized Health initiative, including but not limited to basic and clinical laboratory research, clinical oncology, surgery, pathology, radiology and nuclear medicine, epidemiology, computational biology, pharmacology, nanoscience, drug development and delivery. Our local research cluster also strongly collaborates with the partner leading institutions in Zürich through the PH Alliance Zürich-Basel.

Our aim is to provide a nationally and internationally recognized platform for data integration, multi-level communication, education and training and, most importantly, it will also be the condensation core for research projects that tackle the molecular and cellular defects underlying carcinogenesis and improve patient diagnosis and treatment using an interdisciplinary and multi-institutional approach.

PHB Oncology Cluster Data Integration Engineer

In October 2017, Dr. Saadia Iftikhar joined the PHB team to support Oncology research activities. This function has a critical role in establishing interoperability between fundamentally different databases and data formats from hospital and research sources as well as productive collaborations with our local members, with our partners of the PH-Alliance Zurich-Basel, and potentially with other collaborators from SPHN. Dr. Saadia Iftikhar will be working closely with clinical and scientific research groups as well as with the IT specialists from the University Hospital (USB) who are building the Clinical Data Warehouse infrastructure.

SPHN call 2017: Swiss Personalized Oncology (SPO) Driver Project

Integrating clinical and molecular information from large number of cancer patients will enable more precise diagnoses and treatments tailored to the individual patient. The main goal of the Swiss Personalized Oncology (SPO) Driver Project led by Prof. Mohamed Bentires-Alj (University of Basel) and Prof. Olivier Michielin (CHUV) is to achieve Switzerland-wide interoperability of the clinical and laboratory data from cancer patients. To overcome the current bottlenecks of fragmented and unstructured data, we will harmonize data on diagnoses, treatments and outcomes of cancer patients through the SPHN data warehouse infrastructures and a web-based system for non-university cancer clinics. We will further standardize the molecular profiling of tumor biopsies to enable research for predictive biomarkers. A Swiss Molecular Tumor Board will leverage the analysis and discussion of complex cancer patient cases and play an instrumental role in the nation-wide harmonization efforts to enable innovative research delivering novel and better treatment algorithms for cancer patients.
