Honorary Doctorate of the Faculty of Theology

Laudatio

Dr. Branco Weiss

The Faculty of Theology of the University of Basel confers an honorary doctorate upon
Dr. Branco Weiss.

  • who has rendered outstanding services to establishing an Insitute of Jewish Studies at the University of Basel and who has lent his untiring support to sustaining its welfare and growth within the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Humanities,
  • who has committed himself in an exemplary manner to promoting high-quality educational and talent promotion projects in Switzerland and abroad, not merely through his generous sponsorship of the humanities and sciences at higher education institutions, but also by establishing an institute dedicated to helping children with learning difficulties and by supporting young entrepreneurs establish innovative business ventures,
  • and who has taken a decisive stand against racism and antisemitism by advocating a humane ethos of equitable and peaceful coexistence.

Dr. Branco Weiss

Dr. Branco Weiss was born on 23 April 1929. He is married and lives in Zürich. He graduated from the ETH Zürich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in 1951 with a degree in chemical engineering. Since then, he has committed himself to establishing and managing more than ten national and international high-tech enterprises. From 1985 to 1994, he taught courses on business start-ups and technological strategies at the ETH Zürich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology). He holds three honorary doctorates, from the University of Tel Aviv (1993), the EPFL Lausanne (1998), and the ETH Zürich (1998). He has been awarded the Staudinger Medal of the Department of Materials of the ETH Zürich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology). He is an honorary member of the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects (SIA) and a longstanding member, board member, and honorary member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW). He has also served several advisory committees of the Commission for Technology and Innovation (KTI) of the Federal Office for Professional Training and Technology and a number of federal commissions (DEZA, Science and Education).

Dr. Branco Weiss has rendered outstanding services to the establishment of an Institute of Jewish Studies at the University of Basel and lent his untiring support to sustaining its welfare and growth within the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Humanities. He has committed himself in an exemplary manner to fostering the culture of socio-political responsibility by dedicating himself to promoting high-quality educational and talent promotion projects in and beyond Switzerland. He has also taken a decisive stand against racism and antisemitism by advocating a humane ethos of equitable and peaceful coexistence.
