Mr. Wyss is honoured as the sponsor of several generations of surgeons and orthopaedic specialists at the University of Basel. His untiring support for the cooperation of universities and the medico-technical industry has contributed to the high regard that research in surgery and biomechanics enjoys in the Working Committee for Osteosynthesis and the Faculty of Medicine.
Hansjörg Wyss graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) with a degree in engineering in 1959. He attended Harvard Graduate School of Business in Boston from 1963 to 1965 where he obtained an MBA. From 1965 to 1969 Mr. Wyss worked in various positions in the textile industry. In 1977 he followed Professor Allgöwer’s request to become president of Synthes USA, a distributor of implants for surgical bone treatment manufactured in Switzerland. Mr. Wyss has been a member of several boards of directors, and of the executive council of the Harvard Graduate School of Business alumni association.
Alongside his professional activities, Hansjörg Wyss became actively involved in landscape protection. In 1989 he established the Wyss Foundation, which establishes and sponsors informal partnerships between non-governmental organisations and the US administration to place large swathes of land under government protection. On account of these efforts, almost 12 million hectares of land have been declared national park districts. Within the scope of the foundation’s activities, Mr. Wyss has helped manage several environmental protection organisations. He is currently President of the Utah Wilderness Alliance.
He also established the Wyss Medical Foundation, which has endowed a number of professorships and sponsored several chairs and research projects.
